FoodFirst-Floriade conference: Breaking the hunger cycle

Subject:
The 3rd FoodFirst-Floriade conference shall focus on an urgent issue connected with food security.
At this moment, the lives of millions of people are at risk due to the food crisis in the Sahel region. How is it possible that, less than a year after the food crisis in the Horn of Africa, a new African food crisis is emerging? What can we learn from the experiences from previous crises and, most importantly, how can we act now to avoid further damage and future crises?

The first part of the conference focuses on the current food crises in the Sahel region.
The second part of the conference looks at initiatives that strengthen food security, and that help to prevent future food crises. Technical innovations that raise productivity, improve transport, and reduce food losses are essential for food security.
Joris Lohman, a young talent from the Youth Food Movement, will tickle us with a creative view on the current food challenges.

Subject:
Fast developments are being made by companies and scientists in the field of micronutrient innovations. Food fortification is possible and is happening. Still, one billion people suffer from hunger and another billion is suffering from hidden hunger, i.e. lack of basic micronutrients like vitamins and minerals.

What is the missing link? What can be done to foster food and nutrition security? Is it about insufficient political action, the quality of food on the market, the price of good food, the choices of poor people themselves, ...? Which are the challenges for businesses, policy makers, civil society organisations and scientists to combat (hidden) hunger?

Speakers and panellists: Ben Knapen, Minister for Development Cooperation; Atzo Nicolaï – DSM; Wim Naudé, Maastricht School of Management
<!--; David Nabarro, Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for Food Security and Nutrition; Ester Duflo (tbc), Joke Brandt, Unicef (tbc), panellists from business (Unilever, Nutreco and/or Scelta), science (Maastricht University), government.
