The 3rd FoodFirst-Floriade conference shall focus on an urgent issue connected with food security.
At this moment, the lives of millions of people are at risk due to the food crisis in the Sahel region. How is it possible that, less than a year after the food crisis in the Horn of Africa, a new African food crisis is emerging? What can we learn from the experiences from previous crises and, most importantly, how can we act now to avoid further damage and future crises?
The first part of the conference focuses on the current food crises in the Sahel region.
The second part of the conference looks at initiatives that strengthen food security, and that help to prevent future food crises. Technical innovations that raise productivity, improve transport, and reduce food losses are essential for food security.
Joris Lohman, a young talent from the Youth Food Movement, will tickle us with a creative view on the current food challenges.

Organic farming / ecological agriculture versus intensive industrial farming.
Is intensive industrialized agriculture (using chemical fertilizers etc) the only way to feed the growing world population? Or does this harm ecological sustainability and thus food security and rural development in the longer term? Is LEISA a viable alternative? Can the global food production be made part of the green economy?

1. How can cooperatives contribute to increased access to finance and markets for smallholder producers in developing countries?
2. What are recent experiences and realistic perspectives on supporting cooperative business models? Where can we identify opportunities for collaboration between Dutch cooperatives, companies and organisations and African cooperatives?
Programme: ‘Battleground Africa’: Africa as the potential giant in the world food supply, about the growing economic and (geo)political meaning of the continent. What are the possibilities, challenges and lessons learned of investing in agricultural development in Africa? How can (African and European) business and governments seize these African opportunities?

Fast developments are being made by companies and scientists in the field of micronutrient innovations. Food fortification is possible and is happening. Still, one billion people suffer from hunger and another billion is suffering from hidden hunger, i.e. lack of basic micronutrients like vitamins and minerals.
What is the missing link? What can be done to foster food and nutrition security? Is it about insufficient political action, the quality of food on the market, the price of good food, the choices of poor people themselves, ...? Which are the challenges for businesses, policy makers, civil society organisations and scientists to combat (hidden) hunger?
Speakers and panellists: Ben Knapen, Minister for Development Cooperation; Atzo Nicolaï – DSM; Wim Naudé, Maastricht School of Management

Food systems at the global, regional and local level. In what ways does urban agriculture contribute to urban food security? What are the possibilities and chances for green city initiatives to promote access to food for the urban population?
The aim of the program Food First is "To put the food and agriculture issue at the heart of the political debate from the angle of the new global realities and scarcity, and new claims and demographic trends."
